A braided river, also called a braided channel or braided stream, is a waterway made up of a network of channels separated by small, often temporary islands known as braid bars, or as aits or eyots in British usage. Braiding tends to develop in rivers carrying a heavy sediment load or coarse grain sizes, and on steeper slopes than typical rivers with a single straight or meandering channel.
