A bornhardt is a dome shaped, steep sided, bald rock outcrop that reaches at least 30 meters in height and spans several hundred meters in width. The landform is named for Wilhelm Bornhardt, a German geologist and explorer of German East Africa who was the first to describe it, and it forms in the same way as many inselbergs, from erosion resistant rock such as granite left standing as the softer rock around it wears away, though not every bornhardt is classified as an inselberg.
