The Blue Ridge Mountains form the easternmost range of the Appalachian Mountains, running roughly from northern Georgia to southern Pennsylvania in the eastern United States. They are built largely from ancient metamorphic and igneous rock, some over a billion years old, raised through a succession of mountain building episodes including the Grenville and later Appalachian orogenies, then worn down over hundreds of millions of years into the rounded, deeply forested ridges seen today.
