In geomorphology, geography and geology, a bench or benchland is a long, comparatively narrow strip of level or gently sloping ground set between distinctly steeper slopes above and below it. Benches can be created by very different geomorphic processes, so a given bench's origin has to be read from its own setting rather than assumed from its shape alone.
