The Bear Gulch Limestone is a Late Mississippian limestone deposit in central Montana, roughly three hundred and eighteen million years old, formed in a shallow marine embayment whose periodically oxygen starved bottom waters preserved an unusually complete community of fish, including dozens of shark species, along with soft bodied invertebrates rarely fossilized elsewhere. It is considered one of the most important windows anywhere onto Carboniferous marine life.
