Beacon Rock is a basalt and andesite volcanic plug rising roughly two hundred and fifty eight meters above the Columbia River in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington state, the eroded remnant core of an ancient volcano and among the largest monoliths in North America. A mile long trail with switchbacks and bridges built into the rock face in the early twentieth century by Henry Biddle leads hikers to its summit.
