The Balearic Islands are an archipelago in the western Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, comprising the four main islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera along with numerous smaller islets. The islands were formed by uplift and sit on a raised submarine platform known as the Balearic Promontory, an elevated formation cut by a network of faults trending from northwest to southeast rather than a fragment of continental crust.
