Bald Rock is a granite monolith in Bald Rock National Park in northern New South Wales, Australia, just south of the Queensland border near Tenterfield. It rises about 260 meters above the surrounding land to nearly 1,300 meters above sea level, and at roughly 750 by 500 meters across it is described as the largest granite monolith in Australia. It formed within the New England granite belt, where the Stanthorpe Adamellite intruded into surrounding metamorphic and sedimentary rock about 220 million years ago; subsequent uplift and erosion stripped away the softer surrounding rock, leaving the resistant granite exposed. For millennia the rock served as neutral meeting and trading ground for the Jukembal, Bundjalung and Kamilaroi peoples. This entity documents Bald Rock specifically as a geological formation, the largest granite monolith in Australia.
