A baïne is a pool of water, ranging from a few dozen to several hundred metres long, that lies parallel to a sandy beach and stays directly connected to the sea. Waves and the tide carve these channels roughly every 300 to 400 metres along the shore. The term comes from the Aquitaine coast of France, in the departments of Gironde, Charente-Maritime and Landes, though the same kind of channel can form on beaches elsewhere in the world.
