Aso Rock is a large outcrop of granitic rock on the outskirts of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, rising to 936 meters above sea level and towering roughly 400 meters above the surrounding terrain. It is one of the city's most noticeable physical features and stands beside the Nigerian Presidential Complex, the National Assembly and the Supreme Court. Its name comes from a word meaning victorious in the language of the Asokoro people, who historically used the rock as a place of refuge. In 2003 it lent its name to the Aso Rock Declaration, issued at Abuja by Commonwealth Heads of Government reaffirming Commonwealth principles and prioritizing democracy and development.
