The Artibonite Valley is a valley on the island of Hispaniola, lying mostly in Haiti but extending into the Dominican Republic, through which the Artibonite River flows from headwaters in the Dominican Republic. The valley watershed provides ecosystem services that much of the socio-economic development of this poor region of both countries depends on, but it faces significant degradation from deforestation, inappropriate land use and harmful agricultural practices that threaten its water resources.
