An arroyo is a dry watercourse, named from the Spanish word for a stream or wash, that fills and flows only temporarily or seasonally after sufficient rain, with flash floods common in the channel following thunderstorms. The same kind of feature is called a rambla in Catalan, a word that itself traces back to the Arabic ramla, meaning dry river.
