In geography, an arm is a narrow extension, inlet or smaller reach of water branching out from a much larger body of water, such as an ocean, a sea or a lake. The term overlaps with related ones, since a sound or a bay is sometimes also called an arm and vice versa, and it extends to rivers as well, where a tributary or distributary channel may be called an arm and a canal branch a canal arm; the usage has also shaped place names such as Salmon Arm, Indian Arm and Alice Arm.
