The Argentière Glacier is a glacier in the French Alps, one of the larger glaciers within the Mont Blanc massif, situated above the village of Argentière and lying perpendicular to the Chamonix valley in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. From its source to the Chamonix valley it is nine kilometers long, and like many glaciers in the region it has receded significantly, shrinking 1,000 meters between 1870 and 1967. A five-year study begun in 2004 found the glacier lost an average of 1.5 meters between 2004 and 2009, with a 10 to 11 meter loss in average ice thickness, and by 2011 it had retreated to a position atop a steep slope.
