Animas Valley is a long, narrow, north-south valley about 85 miles long in the Bootheel of western Hidalgo County, New Mexico, part of the Basin and Range Province, with the Continental Divide of the Americas along its eastern edge and the Peloncillo Mountains along its western edge. Its southern end extends toward the Sonora-Chihuahua border and holds the usually dry, Pleistocene-age Lake Cloverdale, also called Animas Flats, in a topographically closed basin, while its northern end is marked by Lordsburg Mesa near the west-flowing Gila River. The valley lies within the Chihuahuan Desert and the wider Madrean Sky Islands region spanning Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico.
