An anchialine system is a landlocked body of water with a subterranean connection to the ocean, occurring as either a pool or a cave depending on its formation. Anchialine systems form within density-stratified coastal aquifers, with fresh or brackish water near the surface and saline water intruding from the coast at depth, and light availability differs sharply between the two forms: cave systems are generally dark while pools are lit, a difference that strongly shapes the biology found in each.
