The Messel Pit is a fossil preservation site of lacustrine, laminated bituminous shale, an oil shale, located in Hesse in central Germany, dated to the Middle Eocene, roughly 47 million years ago. It lies near the village of Messel in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, about 35 kilometers southeast of Frankfurt am Main, and the pit itself covers roughly 0.7 square kilometers, extending about 60 meters below the surrounding land surface. The site has exceptional paleontological importance: more than 1,400 taxa of plants, fungi and animals have been documented there, with fossils preserving fine details including fur, feathers and skin shadows, making it a Konservat-Lagerstatte. The Messel Pit was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 9, 1995, after local opposition prevented its planned conversion into a landfill, and in 2022 the International Union of Geological Sciences also recognized it as one of its first 100 global geological heritage sites. This entity documents the Messel Pit specifically as a geological formation, a Middle Eocene lacustrine oil shale deposit.
