Monte Bolca

Fossil Lagerstatten and Fossil Sites

Monte Bolca is an Eocene fossil deposit near Verona in northern Italy, roughly fifty million years old, formed from fine limestone laid down in a shallow tropical lagoon, renowned for its extraordinarily well preserved fossil fish, several hundred species, along with crabs, plants and other marine life, often retaining color patterns and fine anatomical detail. It is among the most important sites in the world for understanding the diversity of early Eocene tropical marine life and has been studied since the sixteenth century.
