The water table is the upper surface of the zone of saturation, the layer of ground in which the pores and fractures of the rock or soil are filled with groundwater that may be fresh, saline or brackish depending on the location. It can also be described simply as the depth below which the ground is saturated; the unsaturated layer of ground lying above the water table is called the vadose zone, and the water table itself can be pictured as the surface of the saturated groundwater lying beneath a given area.
