In geology, a facies is a body of rock defined by its own distinctive characteristics, which can be any observable attribute of the rock together with how that attribute changes across a geographic area. A facies takes in all of a rock's chemical, physical and biological features, the combination of which distinguishes it from the adjacent rock around it.
