Orthorhombic Crystal System

Mineralogy

The orthorhombic crystal system is one of the seven crystal systems recognized in crystallography. The cited article explains that orthorhombic lattices result from stretching a cubic lattice along two of its orthogonal pairs by two different factors, resulting in a rectangular prism with a rectangular base and a height, such that the three edge lengths are distinct. All three bases intersect at ninety degree angles, so the three lattice vectors remain mutually orthogonal. Materials whose crystals belong to this system are grouped under this concept.
