Taal Volcano is a complex volcanic system occupying much of Volcano Island within Taal Lake in Batangas province, on the Philippine island of Luzon, roughly 50 kilometers south of Manila. The lake itself fills a large caldera formed by earlier catastrophic eruptions, and the modern volcanic cone rising from an island within that lake has, at times, itself held a small crater lake within its own crater, a lake-within-an-island-within-a-lake arrangement often cited as a geographic curiosity. Built from basaltic-to-andesitic material as part of the Philippine volcanic arc, Taal is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines and, because of the dense population living on its surrounding shores, one of the most dangerous, having produced dozens of recorded eruptions with a notably destructive one in 1911 and, more recently, a major explosive eruption beginning in January 2020 that sent ash across much of Luzon including Manila, forced mass evacuations, and disrupted air travel for days. Despite standing only about 311 meters above the lake, its eruptions have repeatedly proven disproportionately deadly and disruptive for its modest height. This entity documents Taal Volcano specifically as a geological formation, a caldera-lake volcanic complex near Manila whose January 2020 eruption forced mass evacuations across Luzon.
