Bulusan Volcano

Volcanic Formations

Bulusan Volcano rises in Sorsogon Province in the Bicol Region of Luzon, Philippines, reaching an elevation of about 1,565 meters. It is a stratovolcano within the Bicol Volcanic Arc, sitting on the northeastern rim of the older Irosin caldera, which formed roughly 36,000 years ago, and carries four craters and four hot springs on its slopes. Bulusan is the fourth most active volcano in the Philippines after Mayon, Taal and Kanlaon, but its modern activity is dominated by sudden, steam-driven phreatic explosions rather than magmatic eruptions, having erupted fifteen times since 2016 alone, including two phreatic events within twenty-four hours in April 2025 that affected more than 74,000 people. This entity documents Bulusan Volcano specifically as a geological formation, a frequently active Philippine stratovolcano whose eruptions are typically steam-driven rather than magmatic.
