Coropuna, also called Nevado Coropuna for its perpetual snow cover, rises in the Andes of southeast-central Peru, its highest of several summits reaching about 6,377 meters, making it the country's third-highest volcanic complex. It is a dormant compound volcano spread across roughly 240 square kilometers, carrying the most extensive ice cap anywhere in Earth's tropical zone, with outlet glaciers descending from its summits toward lower ground. Below about 5,000 meters, diverse ecosystems including forests, wetlands and grasslands support agricultural and pastoral communities on its lower slopes. This entity documents Coropuna specifically as a geological formation, Peru's third-highest volcanic complex and the site of the most extensive ice cap in the tropics.
