Mount Bisoke

Volcanic Formations

Mount Bisoke stands in the Virunga Mountains within the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, straddling the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of the Congo border with its summit in Rwandan territory, about 35 kilometers northeast of Goma and Lake Kivu, and reaches an elevation of about 3,711 meters. It is an active stratovolcano within the same volcanic chain already documented on this atlas as the Virunga Mountains and through its highest peak, Mount Karisimbi, and its summit holds the largest crater lake in the Virungas, roughly 400 meters across and about 100 meters deep. The volcano lies within Volcanoes National Park, part of the same protected landscape that shelters more than a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, though Bisoke itself is climbed rather than used for gorilla trekking. This entity documents Mount Bisoke specifically as a geological formation, a Virunga stratovolcano holding the range's largest crater lake.
