Iraya Volcano

Volcanic Formations

Iraya Volcano stands at the northern tip of Batan Island in Batanes, the northernmost province of the Philippines, reaching an elevation of about 1,009 meters, the highest point on the island. It is an active stratovolcano and the northernmost active volcano in the country, monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology despite having last erupted in 1454, its long quiet period punctuated by a recorded seismic swarm in the area in 1998. The town of Basco, the provincial capital, sits at its base, and its slopes are a recognizable backdrop to the stone houses and rolling grassland the Batanes islands are known for. This entity documents Iraya Volcano specifically as a geological formation, the highest point of Batan Island and the northernmost active volcano in the Philippines.
