Maar

Volcanic Formations

A maar is a broad, low-relief volcanic crater produced by a phreatomagmatic eruption, in which rising magma interacts explosively with groundwater. A maar characteristically fills with water to form a relatively shallow crater lake, which is itself sometimes also called a maar.
