Menengai Crater lies just north of the town of Nakuru in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, a large shield volcano whose summit collapsed into a caldera roughly twelve kilometers across, among the largest calderas in the world. The caldera formed following a massive eruption and subsequent collapse of the volcano's summit, leaving steep walls rising several hundred meters above the crater floor. The volcanic system beneath Menengai remains geothermally active, and its heat now powers the Menengai Geothermal Project, one of Kenya's major sources of geothermal electricity. This entity documents Menengai Crater specifically as a geological formation, a large Rift Valley caldera left by the collapse of a shield volcano and now the site of active geothermal power development.
