Masherbrum, also known as K1, rises in the Ghanche District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, in the Karakoram range, reaching an elevation of about 7,821 meters, the twenty-second-highest peak in the world and Pakistan's ninth-highest mountain. It is a non-volcanic peak raised by the same Karakoram uplift as its taller neighbors, first climbed on July 6, 1960 by William Unsoeld and George Bell, followed two days later by Nicholas Clinch and Jawed Akhter, whose ascent marked the first time a Pakistani climber had reached the summit of a major Karakoram peak; the joint American Alpine Club and Pakistan Army expedition fixed ropes and camps up to about 7,315 meters along the southeast face. This entity documents Masherbrum specifically as a geological formation, a major Karakoram peak whose 1960 first ascent included the first Pakistani summiteer of the range.
