Broad Peak rises on the border between Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, and Xinjiang, China, in the Karakoram range, reaching an elevation of about 8,051 meters, the twelfth-highest mountain in the world and one of the fourteen eight-thousanders. It is a non-volcanic peak, named for its unusually wide, multi-summited crest, raised by the same continental collision as the rest of the Karakoram, and it was first climbed in June 1957 by an Austrian expedition of Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger and Hermann Buhl, the same Buhl who four years earlier had made the solo first ascent of Nanga Parbat. This entity documents Broad Peak specifically as a geological formation, a wide multi-summited eight-thousander of the Karakoram.
