Impact Craters

This group collects the Structural and Tectonic Formations subcategory's members that are impact structures formed by an asteroid or meteorite striking Earth's surface, including deeply eroded ancient examples such as the Vredefort Dome, the largest and oldest verified impact structure known. These features are extraterrestrial in origin rather than produced by Earth's own internal tectonic processes, which sets them apart from every other group in this subcategory even though long erosion can leave them looking superficially like an ordinary structural dome.
