Graben

Structural and Tectonic Formations

A graben is a block of a planet or moon crust that has dropped down relative to the surrounding rock, bounded on both sides by parallel normal faults. The term is German for ditch or trench, describing the depressed strip of crust that forms between the bounding faults as extension pulls the ground apart.
