A ridge is a long, narrow, elevated landform or structural feature, or a combination of both, that is separated from the surrounding terrain by steep sides sloping down from a narrow crest, called a ridgeline when it is especially thin. Ridges form by deposition, by erosion, by tectonic deformation, or by some combination of these processes, and their material varies with that origin, ranging from solid bedrock to loose sediment, lava or ice. A ridge may stand alone or form part of a larger system of landforms, and it can in turn break down into smaller ridge segments depending on how it formed and the geology around it.
