In geology, a supercontinent is the assembly of most or all of Earth's continental blocks, or cratons, into a single large landmass. Some geologists instead define a supercontinent more loosely, as a grouping of continents that were formerly dispersed, a definition that leaves more room for interpretation and is easier to apply to the poorly resolved geography of Precambrian time; to separate a true supercontinent from a lesser grouping, one proposed threshold requires that it include at least about 75 percent of the continental crust in existence at the time.
