Geological Formation

Illampu

Structural and Tectonic Formations

Illampu rises in the northern section of the Cordillera Real, part of the Andes, east of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, the fourth-highest mountain in the country, standing just north of the slightly higher peak Janq'u Uma near the town of Sorata. It is a non-volcanic peak raised by Andean tectonic uplift, and its Illampu-Janq'u Uma massif holds Laguna Glaciar, reported as the seventeenth-highest lake in the world. This entity documents Illampu specifically as a geological formation, Bolivia's fourth-highest peak and part of a massif holding one of the world's highest lakes.
