The Chiloé Archipelago is a group of islands off the coast of Chile's Los Lagos Region, separated from the mainland by the Chacao Channel to the north, the Sea of Chiloé to the east and the Gulf of Corcovado to the southeast. Its largest island, Chiloé Island, covers about 8,394 square kilometers, and the archipelago also includes Quinchao, Lemuy, Tranqui, Desertores and Guafo among others, for a total land area of roughly 9,181 square kilometers. The islands were the last Spanish possession in Chile, holding out against patriot forces until 1826, and the archipelago's name comes from the Mapuche word chillwe, meaning seagull place.
