Ausangate, also spelled Auzangate, rises in the Vilcanota mountain range of the Andes about 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco, Peru, spanning the border between Canchis and Quispicanchi provinces, and reaches an elevation of about 6,384 meters, the highest peak in the Cusco region. It is a non-volcanic, glaciated massif raised by Andean tectonic uplift rather than volcanism, and it is one of the most revered apu, or mountain spirits, in Andean and Quechua tradition, the destination of the annual Qoyllur Rit'i pilgrimage held on its slopes. This entity documents Ausangate specifically as a geological formation, the highest peak of the Vilcanota range and a mountain of major significance in Andean religious tradition.
