The continental shelf of Chile is the underwater extension of the Chilean landmass beneath the Pacific and Southern Oceans, comprising three separate zones: an insular shelf around Easter Island and Salas y Gomez Island, a continental shelf along the mainland Pacific coast, and an Antarctic shelf within the Chilean Antarctic Territory. Chile ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1997 and, through its National Committee for the Continental Shelf established in 2007, has pursued extended continental shelf claims beyond the standard 200 nautical mile limit, including a claim reaching 700 nautical miles east of Salas y Gomez Island. Portions of the shelf, particularly in the Southern Zone Sea near the Drake Passage, remain the subject of an unresolved maritime boundary dispute with Argentina.
