The Mazovian Lowland, also called the Masovian Plain, is the largest geographical region in central Poland, corresponding roughly to the historical region of Masovia and forming part of the broader North European Plain. It occupies the valleys of the Vistula, Bug and Narew rivers and retains substantial forest remnants of Poland's original primeval woodland, including the Kampinos and Kurpie forests, despite being densely populated and urbanized. The lowland was shaped by glacial processes during the Ice Age, marking the southernmost reach of the Scandinavian ice sheet, and its landscape features interwinding layers of Cenozoic aqueous rocks and sands, with gorges cut by glacial meltwater in the south and parabolic dunes around the Warsaw Cauldron and nearby river valleys. Its soils, mostly white sand over glacial clay, support fruit production under a temperate continental climate with under 500 millimeters of annual precipitation in central areas.
