Parnidis Dune

Sand Dunes and Dune Fields

The Parnidis Dune is a drifting, semi-permanent coastal sand dune on the Curonian Spit, southeast of the town of Nida in Lithuania near the border with Russia. It currently reaches about 52 meters above sea level, down from a former maximum of about 60 meters, its height having decreased as continued eastward movement carries sand off the dune and into the Curonian Lagoon. Almost entirely bare of vegetation, it is the only place with drifting dunes within the Curonian Spit National Park, and the surrounding Parnidis Landscape Reserve was established to protect it; the dune is a major tourist attraction, with an observation deck and a granite sundial built in 1995.
