The Sigatoka Sand Dunes lie at the mouth of the Sigatoka River on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji, about three kilometers west of Sigatoka town, and are protected within Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, Fiji's first national park, designated in July 1989. The dune system covers 650 hectares within a 1.77-square-kilometer park and includes parabolic dunes ranging from 20 to 60 meters tall, built up over thousands of years by coastal erosion and sediment deposition. The dunes hold major archaeological significance, with excavations uncovering pottery more than 2,600 years old and one of the largest burial sites in the Pacific, and natural erosion continues to expose pottery shards, stone tools and human remains, making the park both a research site and an educational and recreational destination.
