Rank sorts geologic eras by their formal level in the time scale, such as eon, era, period or epoch. Wikipedia notes that "the definition of standardised international units of geological time is the responsibility of the International Commission on Stratigraphy," the body that fixes exactly which rank a given span of time holds.
