Hierve el Agua is a set of natural travertine formations in San Lorenzo Albarradas, Oaxaca, Mexico, where two rock shelves rising fifty to ninety metres above the valley below carry pale mineral deposits that resemble frozen waterfalls. The formations build up as spring water oversaturated with calcium carbonate and other minerals trickles over the cliff edges and leaves its minerals behind, the same process that forms stalactites in caves. One of the two shelves, called the cascada chica or the Amphitheatre, also holds a number of natural and artificial pools used for swimming.
