Elrhaz Formation

Named Rock Formations and Groups

The Elrhaz Formation is a geological formation exposed in the Tenere desert of Niger, West Africa, part of the Tegama Group, lying above the Tazole Formation and below the Echkar Formation. Composed mainly of sandstone, it preserves an Early Cretaceous environment from roughly 125 to 112 million years ago, a time when the now-arid Gadoufaoua area held trees, plants and wide rivers. The formation is renowned for its fossil record, especially from the Gadoufaoua site, which has yielded the remains of the giant crocodyliform Sarcosuchus imperator, along with numerous dinosaurs, pterosaurs, other crocodyliforms, fish and turtles.
