Purbeck Group

Named Rock Formations and Groups

The Purbeck Group is a lithostratigraphic unit of mudstones and limestones spanning the very end of the Jurassic into the earliest Cretaceous, from the Tithonian to the Berriasian stage, first described from the cliffs of the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, England. It also includes calcareous mudstones, clays, shales and building stones quarried there for centuries. It is well known for fossil reptiles and early mammals, among them the dinosaur Echinodon, crocodylians, plesiosaurs and small mammals such as Plagiaulax and Triconodon, alongside abundant freshwater mollusks.
