Named rock formations, formation groups and stratigraphic units, the distinctly named sequences and outcrops of rock recognized by their own place in the geologic record, following the formal geological formation and lithostratigraphic unit classes of standard stratigraphy. Includes formally named formations, groups and supergroups (Morrison Formation, Hell Creek Formation, Karoo Supergroup, Old Red Sandstone), individually named cliffs, buttes, monoliths and banded rock landscapes carved from a single distinctive rock unit (White Cliffs of Dover, Zhangye Danxia, Vermilion Cliffs, Cathedral Rock, Sedona), and sandstone table mountains, tepuis and mountain massifs built from a single named rock mass (Mount Roraima, Montserrat). Belongs here: any entity whose defining identity is a specific, named body or exposure of sedimentary rock. Does not belong here: a fossil deposit whose own defining description centers on what it preserves rather than the rock unit itself (Fossil Lagerstatten and Fossil Sites), an island or reef built partly of sedimentary rock but identified as a landmass or reef in its own right (Islands and Archipelagos, Coastal and Reef Features), or a named sand dune field (Sand Dunes and Dune Fields).
