The tetragonal crystal system is one of the seven crystal systems recognized in crystallography. The cited article explains that tetragonal crystal lattices result from stretching a cubic lattice along one of its lattice vectors, so that the cube becomes a rectangular prism with a square base and a height that is different from the side of the square. Because two of its three axes are equal and all three meet at right angles, it is less symmetric than the cubic system and more symmetric than the orthorhombic system. Materials whose crystals belong to this system are grouped under this concept.
