Paul Niggli was a Swiss crystallographer, mineralogist and petrologist, born in 1888 in Zofingen and died in 1953 in Zurich. He was a leader in the field of X-ray crystallography, and in 1935 he and his doctoral student Werner Nowacki determined the seventy three three dimensional arithmetic crystal classes. The Niggli reduction, a standardized way of describing a crystal lattice's unit cell, is named for him.
