The region between the current leading edge of a glacier and the moraines of its latest maximum extent is called the glacier foreland, or glacier forefield. In the Alps this maximum was reached in 1850, and the foreland has become ice-free through deglaciation since; because of its comparatively recent exposure, the vegetation and landscape processes of a glacier foreland differ considerably from those of the surrounding, longer ice-free terrain.
