Rock-cut Basin

Landform Concepts

A rock-cut basin is a natural cylindrical depression cut into a stream or river bed, often filled with water. These plucked-bedrock pits are created by kolks, powerful vortices within the current that spin small boulders around, eroding the basin through their abrasive action, and are most often found in streams and rivers with relatively soft substrates such as limestone or sandstone.
